The sixth installment of our Nurses Week testimonials, which feature blog posts written by LifeBridge Health employees. By Marcus Nicholson, BSN, RN, Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital I have been asked the famous question “why did you become a nurse?” It began as a journey that started with witnessing the tragic death of a close friend while I was growing up in Baltimore. At that point, I became driven to help those in need of life-saving treatment. So I took a job at University of Maryland Cardiothoracic Unit as a technician and simultaneously served in the Air Force Reserves as a medical corpsman. I appreciate my time as a technician because it provided the opportunity to observe and learn from expert nurses in critical care. As I discovered that nursing would satisfy … Read entire article »

The fourth installment of our Nurses Week testimonials, which feature blog posts written by LifeBridge Health employees. By Dawn Durkin, L.P.N., Courtland Gardens Nursing & Rehabilitation Center Nursing is an amazing profession. To have the opportunity to help people through some of the most challenging times in their lives is an indescribable feeling. Each aspect of nursing is equally important. However, for me, the best choice is long-term care. It offers unique things that I sincerely like. In a hospital setting, patients come and go, often in less than a week. The added bonus of nursing in long-term care is the chance to really get to know the residents and their families over a number of years. You learn their likes and dislikes, which helps with the quality of their care. It can … Read entire article »

The Clinical Nurse Specialist
The third installment of our Nurses Week testimonials, which feature blog posts written by LifeBridge Health employees. By Michelle Salmon, RN, MSN, CNS-BC, Advanced Practice Nurse, Sinai Hospital of Baltimore The history of advanced practice nursing (APN) dates back to the 19th century, when the discovery of chloroform as an anesthetic agent was made. This discovery led to the specialization of professional advanced practice nursing; nurse anesthetists were the first of four advanced practice nursing roles. In later years, the nurse midwifery, clinical nurse specialist (CNS) and nurse practitioner (NP) roles were developed. The CNS role was created to retain expert nurses in clinical practice, provide care to complex patients and improve patient care and outcomes. The educational preparation to become a CNS includes graduation from a master’s or post masters program. An … Read entire article »
