‘PRECICE-A-Thon’ Draws International Team of Surgeons to Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics
In 2012, the PRECICE Limb Lengthening System, a revolutionary leap in the field of limb lengthening, was made available to patients at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics. The PRECICE was codeveloped by Rubin Institute orthopedic surgeons John Herzenberg, M.D., and Shawn Standard, M.D. It was the first externally controllable internal limb lengthening system to receive FDA clearance. A year later, more than 40 Rubin Institute patients have benefited from this technology, with many more to follow. The … Read entire article »

Meet the Bone Ninja, an iPad App That Analyzes Bone Deformities!
When we think of a ninja, we imagine a sword-swinger in black PJ’s, a warrior who could give Spiderman a run for his money in a wall-crawling contest. The Bone Ninja app for the iPad employs a similar cleverness and stealth as it helps orthopedic surgeons and residents analyze bone deformities and map out surgical procedures. John Herzenberg, M.D., director of the International Center for Limb Lengthening (ICLL) at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics (RIAO), … Read entire article »

Children’s Orthopedics at Sinai: Healing Limbs through Family-Centered Care
A hospital is the last place most kids want to be. Things can be even more challenging for children with orthopedic deformities. They are often confined to a bed, with no outlet for their pent-up energy. Sinai Hospital sees more than 600 of these kids every year. They come from not just the Baltimore area, but from as far away as China, Israel and Norway, to receive treatment at the International Center for Limb Lengthening (ICLL). … Read entire article »

Sinai Volunteers Use Their Expertise to Aid the Hurting People of Haiti
Last month nine Sinai Hospital employees from the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics headed to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, as part of a 19-person medical mission team. They served at the Hopital Adventiste d’Haiti, where they performed orthopedic surgery, staffed a clinic and offered educational lectures to hospital staff. Baltimore Limb Course Celebrates 20 Years
The International Center for Limb Lengthening at Sinai Hospital held its 20th Annual Baltimore Limb Deformity Course over Labor Day weekend. Held at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel, it featured 275 participants from 31 countries and 26 states. I visited to see firsthand how Sinai Hospital doctors John Herzenberg, M.D. (pictured right), Shawn Standard, M.D., Janet Conway, M.D., and Bradley Lamm, D.P.M., have developed a course that trains many of the top orthopedic surgeons from around the world. At first glance the course appeared to be like a trade show. Seventeen medical device manufactures had elaborate displays highlighting some of the latest orthopedic equipment. But then you enter the labs. Doctors from around the world spent nine-hour days participating in saw bone labs, cadaver labs and digital planning labs. At the end of the … Read entire article »

Superheroes Arrive at Sinai Hospital
At Sinai, our pediatric patients are our superheroes. Today, those patients got to meet their superheros: Batman, Robin and Wonder Woman. Thanks to Hope for Henry, a foundation dedicated to bringing smiles to hospitalized children, the characters arrived bearing gifts, food and general awesomeness. Pictured above is 18-month-old pediatric oncology patient Emma Miller, with her mother Jen and men who need no introduction. The Hope for Henry Foundation first began supporting patients at Sinai in 2009, and continues to support the inpatient and outpatient pediatrics patients with gifts and other celebrations. Mary Bohlen, social worker in the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Sinai Hospital, says there have been at least six birthday celebrations courtesy of Hope for Henry. The parties are thrown when a pediatric patient has to spend his or her … Read entire article »

Orthopedic Surgeon Reflects on Haiti Experience
Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, several LifeBridge Health employees have volunteered their time and services to earthquake victims. Among these are physicians Shawn Standard and Albert Aboulafia. An orthopedic surgeon and co-director of sarcoma services at the Alvin & Lois Lapidus Cancer Institute, Aboulafia traveled to Haiti from Feb. 3-7 to work with Project Medishare. Before he left, fellow orthopedic surgeon John Herzenberg sent over 50 pounds of donations that included soap and blankets. An estimated 300,000 Haitians were injured in the 7.0 earthquake. Once Aboulafia arrived, there were roughly 140 adults and 65 children and adolescents in the Medishare tents who were awaiting treatment. He worked at a breakneck pace, estimating that he performed 50 operations over a two-day period, including wound care, skin grafts, amputations and fracture realignments. When a … Read entire article »

RIAO Doctor Treating Injured Haitians
A team from Sinai Hospital’s Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics recently arrived in the Dominican Republic to treat Haitians injured in the earthquake. Team members include Shawn Standard, M.D., a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Marie Gdalevitch, M.D., an orthopedic fellow and James Pepple, M.D., an anesthesiologist. This team is treating severely injured Haitians who have been transported out of field hospitals in Haiti to the more sophisticated CURE International Hospital in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The Sinai team has already operated on a 22-year-old woman who has pelvic and foot fractures and is battling infection in her amputated fingers. “Bernadine is the lone survivor of a school that had 85 students,” said Standard. “After the building collapsed, she was able to crawl out through a window.” The team will also operate on a … Read entire article »
