Ready, Reset, Go! My Liquid Protein Reset Challenge
March 29, 2013 | Add a Comment
I think everyone expects a little weight loss setback around the holidays. It’s not always easy to track everything you’ve eaten when you don’t know what’s in Aunt Jenny’s Holiday Surprise casserole. Exercise routines can get off kilter when there’s wrapping to be done, parties to attend, and 8 different types of cookies to bake. So come January, a jump in the scale usually isn’t a big shock. I have to admit, my holiday season seems … Read entire article »

Learning How to Love Food After Bariatric Surgery
March 11, 2013 | Add a Comment
“I’m not sure she knew where the kitchen was before her surgery.” These were the words shared by my partner Kristi with our guests this weekend after a 5 course wine and food pairing dinner we hosted in our home. I laughed because while it’s certainly an exaggeration, it wasn’t too far from the truth. I hadn’t been much of a cook over the past few years and I think I had gotten lazy, opting for … Read entire article »

Surviving the Big Events After Bariatric Surgery, And All the Little Ones in Between
January 31, 2013 | Add a Comment
One challenge some post op bariatric patients face is how to socialize in a world that stayed the same when yours feels totally different. Parties, for example, are fun, exciting, and notorious for featuring delicious, decadent, and over the top food. While at one time you may have thought of the food with eager anticipation, you might now be thinking of it with some apprehension. With the Super Bowl just days away and birthdays and … Read entire article »

What Does Weight Loss Success Look Like?
January 25, 2013 | Add a Comment
For a very long time, much longer than the last two and a half years since my bariatric surgery, I thought success was a number on the scale. I really believed that once I reached XXX lbs I could say that I was successful in my weight loss journey. After having surgery, I believed I’d hit that number and success would be mine! Funny how the best laid plans don’t always come true the way … Read entire article »

It’s important to learn about the process, before beginning the process! What does that mean? It means that once you have committed yourself to the bariatric/weight loss surgery process you do just that, commit! I equate the bariatric process to that of having your first child. While you are pregnant, family and friends will tell you how much your life is going to change. Yes, we know life will change, and it’s not a good decision … Read entire article »

After Weight Loss Surgery I See Myself in a Totally Different Light
November 15, 2012 | 1 Comment
By now, I am sure you have seen my most recent photo. I have to be honest, I really liked the pictures. That is saying a lot when it comes to me. I could dodge a camera quicker than you can imagine. In my last blog, I referred to steps as a Chinese ancient torture device. Well, the camera was just as offensive! Anytime I saw a picture of myself I would pick out each … Read entire article »

The Color Run – The Happiest 5K on Earth!
October 31, 2012 | 1 Comment
I actually ran a 5K! Okay, so I did have to stop and walk once or twice, but not for long. I definitely ran at least three-fourths of it! The Color Run is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and being a fun run rather than a timed race, I felt like it was the perfect event for my first attempt. There were six of us in our group and half of us ran and half of us … Read entire article »

Bariatric Webinars Allow Patients to Begin Road to Surgery From Home
August 23, 2012 | Add a Comment
Dr. Cynthia L. Long, an advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon at Sinai Hospital, stares intently at a computer screen. She holds a cordless phone to her ear, nodding and smiling as she listens to the other end. Though she’s in the comfort of her own home, Long is still reaching out to prospective patients who want to know more about life-saving weight-loss surgery. 20 years ago, this would be considered unthinkable, and not just because the … Read entire article »

The Little Black Dress: Reaching My Goal After Bariatric Surgery
August 9, 2012 | Add a Comment
The month of May was a great month. My son graduated from high school with many honors. I was very proud! I wanted so badly to wear “that little black dress”. I bought this particular little black dress six years ago. It didn’t fit at the time, but the price was right. I was just drawn to this dress. At that time, I was wearing a size 24/26, and this dress was an 18. We were … Read entire article »

It Works If You Work It: Staying Healthy After Bariatric Surgery
July 30, 2012 | Add a Comment
One of the things you often hear in the diet world is the phrase, “It works if you work it.” Whether it’s an exercise program or a weight loss plan, if you’ve committed yourself to being healthy, it will only work as long as you work it. This rings true with bariatric surgery as well. At first, losing weight will happen no matter what you do because you are physically restricted from eating the volume you … Read entire article »

I Bake, Therefore I Run!
June 25, 2012 | Add a Comment
I posted this in jest as a status update the other day, but it does have a ring of truth to it! Recently I decided I wanted to participate in a unique 5K run called The Color Run. It’s taking place in Washington D.C. in the fall. If you want to see something amazing type in “The Color Run” on YouTube or a search engine. It’s a fun run, not a competitive distance run, yet it … Read entire article »

Since having bariatric surgery on January 19, 2012, I would like to tell you a few of the awesome new things I can do: First, I can cross my legs. WOW! I find myself sitting down and instantly I can cross them without difficulty. Second, I can fit into any booth they place me in when I go out to eat. A Personal Decision: Choosing to Undergo Bariatric Surgery
May 11, 2012 | 1 Comment
For as long as I can remember, I have always thought of myself as “fat.” I have really grown to dislike that word. Even in college, when I was 155 pounds, I still felt bigger than all of my peers. I have never considered myself attractive because of my weight. Because I felt embarrassed of my size, I knew that I had to be the “best” mom and the “best” wife. Being kind to others has … Read entire article »

Gastric Bypass Versus Gastric Banding
February 8, 2012 | Add a Comment
In a January 2012 Wall Street Journal article, a weight loss study conducted in Switzerland found that gastric bypass surgery was associated with “faster and more sustained weight loss than gastric banding.” The study was conducted on more than 400 morbidly obese patients between March 1998 and May 2005. During the study, half of the patients received a gastric band and half of them underwent a gastric-bypass procedure. Cynthia L. Long, M.D., F.A.C.S., advanced laparoscopic and bariatric … Read entire article »

Weight Loss Surgery – To Tell or Not to Tell, That is the Question
January 25, 2012 | Add a Comment
It is an unfortunate truth that weight loss surgery comes with a certain stigma. Other people can assume that the patient was too lazy to lose weight on their own, or that they simply took the “easy way” out. So it can be difficult to “come out” as someone who has had bariatric surgery. One of the first decisions someone considering surgery has to make is when to tell the people around them that they are … Read entire article »
