The Northwest Hospital Outpatient Infusion Center Goes Far with Teamwork

Helen Keller famously observed that “alone, we can do so little; together we can do so much.” The team at the Northwest Hospital Outpatient Infusion Center has gone incredibly far in tending to their patients; by rallying together, they’ve helped to give patients from all walks of life, and with a wide variety of prognoses, a sense of hope and purpose. From the moment any patient walks into the center, he or she is greeted with a hug and a promise – that they will receive the most thorough, compassionate care available. http://www.dreamstime.com/-image9985085

Inspired by the positive feedback from their patients, and by the bonds they’ve forged over many years of working together, the group elected to enter the Value of the Month contest. In their application essay, they described how the value of teamwork has animated their work: “Teamwork is how our unit operates to thrive professionally and emotionally. We all have distinctly different personalities, home lives and interests but it is amazing how our core values of wanting to provide excellent care are exactly aligned when we come together.” In that essay, they likened each member of the team to the unique piece of a puzzle that, when assembled, “[made] a beautiful picture of compassion, knowledge and organized care for our patients.” It was a picture that pleased contest judges, who awarded them top honors as “Best Team”, which included prize money that they could choose however they saw fit. Together, the team elected to give this prize money to a patient with young children at home.

This spirit of generosity is what makes patients like Betsy DiMaggio say that seeking care at the Outpatient Infusion Center “makes you feel like a part of a family.” DiMaggio adds that a large part of this family feeling comes from watching the team members work so well together. “They’re always willing to help each other, and to be encouraging and uplifting to their peers. Watching them work in unity creates a real sense of peace and calm that helps you heal.”

  • After an exhausting workday, exercising is probably the last thing you want to do. But getting your sweat on will actually energize you. According to a study published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, fatigue along with mood and depression improved after a single 30-minute, moderate intensity exercise session. #WednesdayWisdom

  • “Teamwork is our motto and that is how we function each day,” says Nurse Manager Michele Stiller of the Northwest Center for Wound Care and Hyperbarics. This center, which sees about 500 patients every month, helps patients with chronic non-healing wounds, such as pressure ulcers and complicated surgical wounds. #TeamLifeBridge
