We did it!
After a few months of nerves, excitement, encouragement, doubts and outfit planning- we made it to the Baltimore Color Run together! Among thousands of walkers and runners, we crossed the finish line damp from rain, colored with powder and wearing smiles from ear to ear.
Diana – For me personally, I never dreamed that I would enter any event that involved me running! That was just not a thought in my head, but it was a bucket list dream….and I did it! I felt at times that I held the team back a little, but I ran/ walked with amazing old and new friends. I remember seeing the black “Finish” line and even now tears come to my eyes. I also noticed that Bettina held back to cross with ME! She certainly could have finished well before me, but was my partner throughout the race. We started with four and we ended with four. What an amazing experience!
Bettina – It only took a second to remember what I felt like signing up for the Color Run last year. I wasn’t sure if I was crazy, overly ambitious or simply turning into someone new. As we waited in the crowd to get started at the race I have a feeling Diana had a few of those thoughts as well. The run wasn’t for time. It wasn’t to reach a certain goal other than to have fun and finish, but for both of us it was HUGE. Doing a 5K after years of doing a little bit of nothing (I speak for myself on that one) was a major difference for me and it’s now become somewhat of a personal milestone- as will every one we do in the future.
Diana – I cannot express my gratitude for the encouragement I received from co-workers, my friend Bettina and most of all my family. My husband stood in the rain waiting for me to finish. I texted him, “I DID IT” as soon as I was done and his reply was “I am so proud of you”. If anyone here knows my husband, the only two letters he ever texts are “ok.” He does not text, but he did that day. It was a day of MANY firsts. Weight loss is a journey that cannot be summed up in one 5K race. Slow and steady, always moving forward is the goal. Maybe today you can run one more block than yesterday. I will always treasure the memory of this day because it was a day I thought would never come, but it did!
Bettina -You don’t have to go through weight loss surgery to make big changes in your life. Maybe you just do something a little different every day that can make you healthier. Drink water instead of soda. Swap out chips for carrots. Walk up the stairs instead of taking the elevator. I started to jog on the treadmill after I felt great walking and that lead me to think about a 5K. I love feeling healthier than ever and any time I can do so with friends- all the better! Sharing this experience with Diana (and others) made it even more special and I know that this first race together will be a cherished memory for years to come. My final thought- never underestimate yourself- you might just find out that you’re AMAZING after all!
