The Color Run – The Happiest 5K on Earth!

I actually ran a 5K! Okay, so I did have to stop and walk once or twice, but not for long. I definitely ran at least three-fourths of it!

Before the run

The Color Run is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and being a fun run rather than a timed race, I felt like it was the perfect event for my first attempt. There were six of us in our group and half of us ran and half of us walked the course.  I had been following the Couch to 5K plan over the summer, but I fell of the training wagon once vacation hit in September.  So, the fact that I was able to do this at all was a huge accomplishment!

After the run

I still can’t say I’m a runner, but I can say that it felt wonderful to move my body and finish the run.  I felt sassy in my neon and white and I didn’t feel out of place among the thousands of participants.  I don’t have an official bucket list, but if I did, I know I would have checked this off!

Being morbidly obese for so many years, the idea of running was laughable.  The idea of running was also painful, as my knee issues (torn and repaired ACL) often reared up if I did any real physical activity.  Let’s be honest, they reared if I walked up more than a flight of stairs at a time, which is only part of the reason I avoided doing that as much as possible.  Being so overweight made me unhappy but it also made me stagnant and lethargic.  It kept me on the couch because I was always tired- always drained.

As soon as the weight came off I had a renewed energy that seemed to come out of nowhere.  I’d get up to do things during commercial breaks and I’d be quick to run upstairs to get something that before I’d avoid unless absolutely necessary.  I don’t have to tell you which state of being I enjoy more!

I still have weight to lose and some days this bothers me and some days it doesn’t.  On a day like Sunday, when I felt good in my skin and proud of myself, those last 15 pounds didn’t matter at all.  Being healthy is much more than a number on the scale, and sometimes I need to remind myself of that along this journey.  I don’t want the number to creep up but I also don’t want to let it discourage me from living my life to the fullest and enjoying the victories I experience along the way.

I am a Color Runner!!!

Way to go Bettina!!! You are so right. Success is not in the numbers on the scale but in the continuance of the lifestyle changes you have made! Great JOB!!

  • At #LifeBridgeHealth, we are proud to be partners in our communities. Wanda Merryman, a Samuelson Breast Care Center mammography tech, loved "School of Rock" at the Hippodrome and was excited to see one of the many ways LifeBridge Health is caring for our communities together. Where do you see LifeBridge Health out in the community? #Community #communitymatters

  • What's happening here? Why are we taking a picture of the fabulous team from the #LifeBridgeHealth Corporate Business Office (CBO) in Timonium? It's because the team will be profiled in an upcoming article in the Bridge, our employee newsletter. #teamlifebridge

  • Congratulations to these Sinai team members who are the inaugural honorees for the Sam Penn Hero Awards. Twice a year, 10 frontline staff will receive this honor for going above and beyond in meeting patient expectations. The awards are named for Sam Penn, a former Sinai board member, who believed that it was our responsibility to exceed our patients' expectations. Penn's wife and sons are honoring his legacy by creating the Sam Penn Hero Awards. #Awards #LifeBridgeHealth #SinaiHospital #PatientCare

  • Our #LifeBridgeHealth purpose statement is ”caring for our communities together.” It is not just something we say, it's something that we do! With the help of our community partners, we recently welcomed dozens of local residents as part of a community hiring event. Participants interviewed for open positions at both #SinaiHospital and #Levindale. #mybmore #community
