The Color Run – The Happiest 5K on Earth!

I actually ran a 5K! Okay, so I did have to stop and walk once or twice, but not for long. I definitely ran at least three-fourths of it!

Before the run

The Color Run is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and being a fun run rather than a timed race, I felt like it was the perfect event for my first attempt. There were six of us in our group and half of us ran and half of us walked the course.  I had been following the Couch to 5K plan over the summer, but I fell of the training wagon once vacation hit in September.  So, the fact that I was able to do this at all was a huge accomplishment!

After the run

I still can’t say I’m a runner, but I can say that it felt wonderful to move my body and finish the run.  I felt sassy in my neon and white and I didn’t feel out of place among the thousands of participants.  I don’t have an official bucket list, but if I did, I know I would have checked this off!

Being morbidly obese for so many years, the idea of running was laughable.  The idea of running was also painful, as my knee issues (torn and repaired ACL) often reared up if I did any real physical activity.  Let’s be honest, they reared if I walked up more than a flight of stairs at a time, which is only part of the reason I avoided doing that as much as possible.  Being so overweight made me unhappy but it also made me stagnant and lethargic.  It kept me on the couch because I was always tired- always drained.

As soon as the weight came off I had a renewed energy that seemed to come out of nowhere.  I’d get up to do things during commercial breaks and I’d be quick to run upstairs to get something that before I’d avoid unless absolutely necessary.  I don’t have to tell you which state of being I enjoy more!

I still have weight to lose and some days this bothers me and some days it doesn’t.  On a day like Sunday, when I felt good in my skin and proud of myself, those last 15 pounds didn’t matter at all.  Being healthy is much more than a number on the scale, and sometimes I need to remind myself of that along this journey.  I don’t want the number to creep up but I also don’t want to let it discourage me from living my life to the fullest and enjoying the victories I experience along the way.

I am a Color Runner!!!

Way to go Bettina!!! You are so right. Success is not in the numbers on the scale but in the continuance of the lifestyle changes you have made! Great JOB!!

  • Did you know #SinaiHospital used to be located in downtown #Baltimore? Pictured here are the last few remaining boxes that needed to be unpacked after the big move to our current location in 1959.

  • #WednesdayWisdsom This school year, remember to keep your child’s backpack load light. Backpacks shouldn’t weigh more than 10% of your child’s weight; heavy backpacks can cause neck and back pain, as well as poor posture. #BackpackAwarenessDay (Source: @AOTAinc)

  • #DYK On average someone in the United States has a #stroke every 45 seconds. This week meet Faye Elliott, the quality nurse coordinator for #NorthwestHospital's stroke program. Faye plays a vital role in organizing and handling logistics and some clinical matters for an interdisciplinary group of medical experts who makes sure patients receive the best care possible. We are so appreciative of her dedication and commitment to #TeamLifeBridge.
