William P. Jaquis, M.D., chief, Department of Emergency Medicine at Sinai Hospital, named to the Board of Directors of the American College of Emergency Physicians

LifeBridge Health is honored to announce that our own William P. Jaquis, M.D., chief, Department of Emergency Medicine at Sinai Hospital, has been named to the Board of Directors of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). Emergency physicians are at the front lines of some of the most vital – and immediate – challenges in patient care, and the ACEP is devoted to supporting quality emergency medical care and promoting the interests of emergency physicians.

The organization’s overarching mission and vision is determined by its Board of Directors; according to ACEP’s website, the board also “provides day-to-day management and direction … and serves as its policymaking body.” Board members are elected by the ACEP council after a highly competitive process: ACEP councilors are nominated by their fellow council members; this year, there were five candidates for only two positions. These candidates must respond to a series of written questions and draft an informational paper; then, they have to deliver a two-minute speech to the entire council. Afterward, they field questions from various committees within the council.

Board members serve three-year terms (with a limit of two consecutive terms). The Board of Directors represents a breadth of perspectives and a diverse array of experiences; their varied backgrounds help inform and inspire their leadership decisions, especially as the health care industry as a whole undergoes significant shifts. For Jaquis, the biggest issue is emergency medicine’s presence within health care reform, since many accountable care decisions, particularly if (and where) patients will be admitted, come through the emergency room.

Before his nomination, Jaquis had been an active member of the council, chairing several committees and serving on different task forces. “It’s fantastic to be nominated, and then elected by my peers,” he says. “Our mission is very important.”
