National Child Passenger Safety Week (September 17-22)

Every year thousands of children are injured or killed in automobile accidents. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle deaths are the leading cause of death for children ages 3 to 14. Most of these deaths could have been prevented if the children were properly secured in their car safety seat or were wearing their seat belt.

Research has shown that 7 out of 10 children are not properly restrained when they are traveling in a vehicle. What are some of the most common safety seat and seat belt installation mistakes?

  • Seat is not appropriate for the child’s size or age.
  • Seat is not placed in the proper direction.
  • Harness is not properly secured.
  • Seat belt does not fit properly across the child.
  • Seat is broken or defective.

You can read more about common mistakes when installing child car seats on ConsumerReports.org.

National Child Passenger Safety Week focuses on keeping children safe on the road. As part of the week-long celebration, National Seat Check Saturday is celebrated Saturday, September 22.
