Successful Blood Drive at Levindale
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Those words hardly seem like enough, but they come from the heart. Levindale collected 30 pints of blood at our recent Red Cross drive. Thanks to all of the people who rolled up their sleeves. As many as 90 lives may have been saved because one pint of blood can help up to three people in distress.
Needing blood is not something you usually think about until you’re in a crisis situation. However, when that’s the case, your life or the life of a loved one can depend on the ability to get the correct type of blood quickly. That’s why your time now could really help in the future.
It’s vital to keep replenishing the supply because platelets can only be used for five days, and according to the Red Cross, donations are down more than 10 percent across the country this summer. This means that there are tens-of-thousands of fewer pints of blood available for hospitals to use than the organization was hoping would be accessible.
In addition to saving lives, donors are treated very well. At Levindale, donors were given snacks, juice and water. They also received a T-shirt. Janine Boulad, the Levindale blood drive organizer and volunteer coordinator, added that there was one new donor who gave blood during this drive.
Even if you missed the Levindale effort, it’s never too late to help. Just call the Red Cross at 1-800-RED-CROSS to find a site near you.
