Herman & Walter Samuelson Breast Care Center Named ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
Northwest Hospital’s Herman & Walter Samuelson Breast Care Center has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
This distinction means the Samuelson Breast Care Center has earned accreditation in not only the ACR’s mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program but also in all of the ACR’s voluntary breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules. The center is now fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy.
To meet this goal, the Samuelson Breast Care Center was subject to rigorous peer-review evaluations conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. These reviews determined that the center meets high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, and quality control procedures and assurance programs.
Also, in late March, Robert H. Paley, M.D., joined the Samuelson Breast Care Center as its dedicated breast radiologist who exclusively reads mammograms and other breast imaging results.
“Numerous studies have shown that dedicated breast imagers are more accurate than their peers in diagnosing breast cancer and evaluating breast abnormalities,” says Dawn J. Leonard, M.D., breast surgeon and medical director of the Samuelson Breast Care Center. “If there’s a single reason why a woman should choose a particular center over another for her breast imaging needs, the choice should be the center where her studies will be read by a radiologist with expertise in the field who is dedicated to women’s imaging, with experience on his or her side.”
Dr. Paley comes to Northwest Hospital via Saint Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, where he was chair of Diagnostic Imaging and a general radiology practitioner with a concentration in breast imaging. Dr. Paley received his medical degree from Tufts Medical School in Boston; he later completed a fellowship in interventional radiology there. His residency in diagnostic radiology was at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Though having a dedicated breast radiologist is not a requirement for an ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, Dr. Paley’s presence at the Samuelson Breast Care Center will enhance its new status.
The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., is a national organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs for focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology, as well as the delivery of comprehensive health care services.
